physiotherapy
The main aim of our Physiotherapy service is to improve the quality of life of patients who are under-going or who have undergone cancer treatment. This is achieved through optimising physical function, minimising treatment-related side effects and improving over well-being through exercise programs tailored to the individual's unique needs and goals. Hands-on therapy is also available for pain management.

Why Exercise?
Exercise is a safe and effective way to counteract many of the negative physical and emotional effects of cancer and its treatment. Research has shown that people with cancer who engage in exercise programs have significantly less fatigue, lower levels of mental distress, better physical function and have an improved quality of life. Patients can feel confident that they are receiving individualised and evidence-based exercise recommendations that are tailored to their unique needs and goals. There is also an onsite pilates reformer that can be used as part of therapy (Windsor Gardens only)

Cording, also known as axillary web syndrome, is a condition that can occur after breast cancer surgery or lymph node removal, where a visible or palpable band or cords develop in the axilla or upper arm. Cording can cause pain, stiffness, and limited range of motion, which can impact daily activities. Cording is also a risk factor for the development of Lymphoedema.
Gentle mobilisation and soft tissue release techniques are used to help break up scar tissue and release tightness in the affected area.

lymphoedema
Lymphoedema is a chronic condition in which excess fluid accumulates in the tissues, causing swelling and discomfort. It occurs when the lymphatic system is damaged, blocked or removed, which may occur as a side effect from your cancer or cancer treatment. Approximately 20% of patients treated for breast, melanoma, gynaecological or prostate cancers will develop lymphoedema. Lymphoedema is a lifelong condition, however if detected early, conservative therapy can have a significant effect on it's progression and impact.
-
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialised massage technique designed to stimulate the flow of lymphatic fluid throughout the body. This type of massage uses gentle, rhythmic movements to encourage the lymphatic system to remove excess fluid, waste, and toxins from the body.
Your therapist will also teach you ways in which you can perform self-massage at home.
-
Scars are a natural healing process of the body, however they can often cause sensitivity, tightness and reduced range of movement. Early scar management therapy is essential post surgery and can reduce discomfort, appearance and the risk of developing Lymphoedema.
-
Compression therapy is a non-invasive treatment for lymphedema that involves applying pressure to the affected area using specialised bandages, wraps or compression garments. The pressure helps to reduce swelling and improve lymphatic flow, which can relieve discomfort and improve mobility.
-
Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a non-invasive therapy that utilizes low-level light to stimulate cellular function and promote healing in the body. This therapy, also known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT) or red light therapy, works by exposing tissues to low levels of red or near-infrared light, which are absorbed by cellular components, triggering biochemical changes. PBM is an evidence-based therapy shown to reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, accelerate tissue repair, enhance muscle recovery, and improve skin conditions.
